Gil Colon , 31, works for MTV. He has a COOL JOB as Producer.

"My job is FUN, INSANITY!!" Colon has produced shows like MTV Sports, Beach House and New Years Eve.

A Day in the Life of:
Currently, Colon is working as the producer for 'Spring Break'. They will do the taping for the show in March, but to prepare for the taping, Colon and his staff have a lot of work to do! He just returned from Cancun, Mexico where they did a location scout for the show. This included a collaboration of stage, lighting and technical experts to figure out the best way to film the show in the location they chose. They calculated the angles of the sun for optimum lighting, they took dimensions of the stage, etc... Basically, they figured out all the mechanics of filming/taping the show.

How He Got That Gig:
Colon did an internship with MTV in the Production Management Department, during his last semester of college. He worked on tech crew, budgets and travel logistics. After college, he was hired at MTV.

Career Path:
Colon started at MTV working as an Intern in the Production Management Department. After college, he was hired at the MTV/VH1 studio as a production assistant where his duties included logging, labeling tapes and time coding. "I got comfortable in a studio environment but it was not creative enough for me," said Colon.

After two years he was hired to work on the show, MTV Sports, as a Music Coordinator. His job was to put cutting edge music to cutting edge sports. "It was so much fun. It was a great opportunity to get some music on MTV that wouldn't have had the exposure if it weren't for the program," he said. He and his team won an EMMY for MTV Sports that year.

After MTV Sports, Colon got a job working on MTV Beach House in Malibu, California. He was the second producer for the show. After the show, he was hired as a staff member at MTV as Assistant Producer. For two years he worked on Beach House and other seasonal shows.

Two years later he became the Staff Segment Producer for MTV and did an MTV special on Janet Jackson. He also worked on Beach MTV, a traveling show about nine people who travel up and down beaches from Key West to Cape Cod, in a Winnebago. "That was rad!" Colon said.

Then, he was promoted to Producer, and worked on MTV's Sports and Music Festival for four shows. His big break came in 1998 when he was hired as the head Producer for Beach House in Seaside Heights, New Jersey.

Since then, Colon has been the Producer for several shows including Summer in Bahamas at Paradise Island, Play a Million - Pay a Million - which was an MTV special celebrating their one millionth on-air video. He also produced a Britney Spears special, New Years 2001 and Spring Break 2001.

High Five:
"I like the people I work with and the opportunities to do new and creative things."

Down Low:
"The trickiest part is when it's hard to get the answers you need in a timely manner because everyone is so busy. Also, I always have to be creative in coming up with new shows that will peak the audience's attention. Lastly, it's hard to have a life with this job. It's not uncommon to have a 24-hour work day."

Wow!
Here are a few of Colon's most memorable days on the job:
  • Winning an Emmy for the show: MTV Sports
  • Interviewing Lou Reed
  • Learning how to snowboard in Aspen, Colorado
  • Working on a boat in Hawaii

Education:
Degree in Broadcast management/technology from Kingsboro College in New York. (College program)

Words from the Wise:
"Go for it!! Do Internships!!! Send your resume to the contact person, and call them. Take it seriously, ask a lot of questions and don't be intimidated."
